What is Receipt Voucher?
A receipt voucher is an internal accounting document that records the receipt of cash or a bank transfer by a business, supporting the journal entry that debits cash or bank and credits the source of funds.
How It Works
- Issue a sequentially numbered voucher for each cash or bank inflow.
- Record the date, payer name, amount, payment method, and reason.
- Reference the related invoice, contract, or other source document.
- Obtain approvals as required by the company’s internal controls.
- Post the journal entry and file the voucher with its supporting documents.
Saudi Context
Saudi businesses are expected to maintain receipt vouchers as part of the books required by the Commercial Books Law. ZATCA examiners review voucher sequences and supporting documents during tax audits, especially for cash-intensive businesses like retail.
Example
A customer pays SAR 12,000 in cash for invoice #1023. Receipt voucher #RV-0456 is issued, debiting cash SAR 12,000 and crediting accounts receivable SAR 12,000.
